THE DAY OF UNIFICATION

The Day of Unification is the Ukrainian national holiday, celebrated annually on January 22. The event of unification of the Western Ukrainian People's Republic and the Ukrainian People's Republic took place on this day in 1919.

In 2011, the President of Ukraine signed a decree according to which the Day of Unification became an official holiday.

Every year on January 22 the streets of Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities are decorated with national symbols and flags. People in the streets traditionally form so-called human  chains that serve a symbol of unification of Ukrainian lands.

Solemn traditional events are held in a railroad car outside the town of Fastov, not far from Kyiv, where the Museum of Wheels opened in 2001 is situated. The ceremony of signing preliminary agreements regulating a union ZUNR and UNR happened in this very car on December 1, 1918.

About two million Ukrainians were linked in a human chain between Kyiv and Lviv on January 21, 1990. That event came to symbolise the spiritual unity of people living in the eastern and western regions of Ukraine.

The tradition was revived in the 2000s showing the integrity of Ukraine. Such chains are often formed on Paton Bridge in Kyiv, symbolically uniting left and right banks of the Dnipro.
